CBD: What is it and why is it awesome?

There is a wealth of CBD talk nowadays; but does this ancient plant live up to all the hype? The answer is, in a word, yes. But first, what is CBD?

CBD is short for 'cannabidiol,' one of over 100 active compounds present in the Cannabis sativa plant, more commonly known as cannabis or marijuana. Certain marijuana species have been bred specifically to have a high CBD content and low THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content, the psychoactive component in marijuana. CBD is produced from a raw form present in the plant, CBDa, after it is decarboxylated, or held at a certain temperature, to release more active anti-inflammatory components.

Clinical research shows that CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, having positive effects both internally and externally. CBD binds to receptors inside and outside the body, commonly known as the endocannabinoid (ECS) system. The ECS is present in everyone's body at birth and helps maintain homeostasis in the body by balancing neurological, stress and pain relieving mechanisms, among other body processes. To learn more about the ECS, watch the first half of this TED talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GsmTFytBYI. From preventing adverse memories, promoting emotional health, to bruising, acne, scars and wrinkles, CBD works in a variety of ways to keep you healthy.

Internally, CBD has been shown to relieve pain associated with inflammation and nerve conditions. It does not mask symptoms, but genuinely helps to stop the cause of the pain at the source by communicating directly with cells. CBD may also help reduce anxiety and depression, including stress and post-traumatic stress disorder, by regulating serotonin in the brain and preventing over-firing of nerve synapses. Similarly, CBD eases neurological disorders such as epilepsy and multiple sclerosis by regulating cell signals in the brain. Anti-cancer and anti-tumor effects have also been shown in animal studies.

Externally, CBD has been shown to have positive effects on skin conditions including acne, signs of aging, dark spots, psoriasis, eczema, scarring, inflammatory conditions, viral and fungal infections, and wound repair. These effects are achieved in numerous ways, including balancing and reducing sebum (oil production), regulating skin cell health and production by communicating with keratinocytes (protein cells), regulating melanin (pigment) production, blocking inflammatory agents, and performing antimicrobial activity. In clinical trials, the quality of life of patients was improved, with no irritation or side effects shown.

Sound like a miracle? It kinda is! Nature is the Best Chemist, after all. That being said, nothing is a complete cure-all, and a healthy diet, exercise, plenty of water and rest are necessary for your healthiest life. CBD, however, is an amazing tool to stay healthy and balanced, inside and out. Have more questions? Want to try one of our awesome CBD+ products?
